The 1984 Tour de Corse rally will always be remembered for the debut of the Peugeot 205 T16,the first of the 4wheel driver mid engined Group B supercars.
The Tour de Corse was the fifth round of the 1984 World Rally championship and up against the new Peugeots were the Audi Quattros and Lancia 037s. Walter Rohrl was giving Audi's new Sport Quattro its world debute granted to alot less fanfare than the Peugeot.
Rohrls Quattro was in trouble from the first stage with engine oil temp at 160c and water at 118c. The new machine fianally blew up on the 8th stage.
Ari Vatanen on the other hand gave the peugeot a dream debute, leading the rally until he crashed out in fog and rain 20th stage and giving the lead and win to Markku Alen in his Lancia. Which would turn out to be Lancia's only win of the year.
Jean-Pierre Nicolas held up the Peugeot honour by bring the remaing 205 T16 home in 4th place.
The Acropolis rally held in Greece was the 6th round of the World Championship and Audi was back on form taking the first two places with Blomqvist and Mikkola driving the tried and tested Quattro A2.
